What Is A Wet Belt?

A wet belt is a timing belt that runs inside the engine, bathed in oil, rather than dry on the outside. Manufacturers use them to save space and reduce noise, and you will find them on engines like the Ford 1.0 EcoBoost and many Transit, Vauxhall, Peugeot and Citroen units. The problem is that over time the belt breaks down in the oil and starts shedding material.

That debris can block the oil pickup and, worse, the belt can fail completely. When a wet belt goes it often takes the engine with it, turning a routine job into a rebuild that can cost thousands. Replacing the belt in good time, as a guide once you are past around 60,000 miles, is a fraction of that cost. We do these day in and day out at our Sittingbourne workshop, properly and for less than a main dealer.

Why it matters

A Belt Snaps.
An Engine Dies.

Wet belts run inside the engine in oil and break down over time. When one fails it does not warn you, it goes, and on these engines that often means a rebuild costing thousands. Replacing the belt in good time is a fraction of that and saves the engine.

  • Avoid an engine rebuild costing thousands
  • A planned job is far cheaper than a failure
  • Specialists who do these daily

Questions

Wetbelt FAQs.

What is a wet belt?
It is a timing belt that runs inside the engine in oil. Over time it breaks down, and if it fails the engine can be badly damaged.
When should it be replaced?
As a guide, once past around 60,000 miles it is worth getting checked. We will advise based on your exact vehicle and mileage.
Is this done at my home?
Wetbelts are done at our Sittingbourne workshop where we have everything to do the job properly. Most are completed the same day.
Which vehicles do you cover?
Ford, Vauxhall, Peugeot, Citroen and more, including the 1.0 EcoBoost and Transit Custom. Send your reg to confirm.
Why not just wait?
A wet belt fails without warning. A planned replacement is a fraction of the cost of the engine rebuild a snapped belt can cause.
How common is this really?
Very. There are well over 700,000 wet belt Ford EcoBoost vehicles on UK roads, the most of any country in Europe. Ford has even cut the official belt interval on the 2.0 EcoBlue Transit and Custom to 6 years or 100,000 miles, down from 10 years or 150,000, because DPF regeneration can dilute the oil and attack the belt. Stellantis engines such as the Peugeot and Citroen PureTech were affected too.
What actually happens when one fails?
The belt runs in the oil, and as it ages it sheds rubber. Those particles block the oil pump pickup, the engine loses oil pressure and can seize, which often means a rebuild or replacement running into the thousands. An early warning sign is rubber debris in the oil filter, which is why we check it. Real world failures often show up between 60,000 and 100,000 miles.
